Jang-deok is a major character in Dae Jang Geum. Dae Jang Geum ( literally The Great Jang Geum, aired in the United States as A Jewel in the Palace) is a 2003 TV series produced She is the daughter of a middle class family that lost favor with the government due to the suicide of her mother. Jang-deok herself became a government slave but regained her original status by becoming a physician lady. When Jang Geum is exiled to Jeju as a government slave, Jang-deok is the Medicine Mistress of Jeju Island. Jeju may refer to Jeju-do, an island of South Korea Jeju City, the biggest city on that island She eventually becomes Jang Geum's medical teacher. When Jang Geum returns to the palace, Jang-deok goes with her to Han-yang and lives in a public residential clinic she owns. Seoul ( soʊl is the Capital and largest City of South Korea.

Jang-deok is portrayed as a kind and skilled but proud figure. She is also one of the few middle-aged women in Korea who is not a palace woman and still a virgin. However, when she returns to Han-yang, she begins to lose her arrogant feeling.
