As a teen, Smithers was involved in a car accident which left a permanent scar on her chin. To avoid another car that had run a stop sign, Jan swerved and hit a telephone pole. The impact smashed her face into the steering wheel, causing the injury. This scar cost her some roles and, according to Jan, made her feel insecure about her looks.
From 1987 through 1995 she was married to actor James Brolin. In 2001 Jan appeared on "Entertainment Tonight" specifically to quash the rumor that Barbra Streisand had stolen Brolin away from her. More recently she has suffered from an emotional breakdown after the death of her father, with whom she was extraordinarily close. She was involved in a rather bizzare accident when she was driving in her car, naked, and stopped her car and tried to flag down a truck for assistance. The truck driver did not see her in time and hit her, although her injuries were not life threatening. Upon investigation, her car was found to be in working order and Jan has no memory of the incident. She is apparently recovering both physically and mentally since the incident. [2]
