Prior to joining Scorpions, Kottak was a drummer for Kingdom Come, Warrant, Wild Horses, Montrose, the McAuley Schenker Group, and Buster Brown. Kingdom Come is a Hard rock band fronted by Hamburg -born vocalist Lenny Wolf. Wild Horses was a band featuring former Kingdom Come and Warrant members Rick Steier and James Kottak. The couple has three children; one girl, Tobi, and two boys, Miles and Matthew. He is also the cousin of Steve Kottak, director of communications for Reynolds American in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
