Plot

When San Francisco heiress Paige Forrester is murdered at her remote beach house, husband Jack (Jeff Bridges) is devastated. To make matters worse, he is then arrested for her murder by a posturing D. A. , played by Peter Coyote. He hires lawyer Teddy Barnes (Glenn Close) to defend him, despite the fact that she hasn't handled a criminal case in years. Over the course of time, an attraction grows between them. D. A. Krasny is convinced that Forrester is an "iceman" who carefully planned the murder for months, and killed his wife in a horrific manner in order to make it look like the work of a crazed killer. Teddy doesn't believe him—there is bad blood between her and Krasny due to an event years earlier when Teddy was working for the D. A. 's office and, it is implied, helped Krasny cover something up in order to advance his career. It was this event that caused Teddy to leave criminal law and work for a corporate law firm instead. Meanwhile, Teddy finds herself defending a man she has fallen in love with. There are numerous shocking turns throughout the trial that keep the audience guessing about Forrester's guilt or innocence.
