Synopsis

Suhaan (Salman Khan), receives a notice that his divorced wife Piya Goyal (Preity Zinta), who has settled in the United States wants a final settlement of 50 lakh rupees lump sum in return for the alimony that Suhaan did not pay because of his poor financial condition. Agastya Rao (Akshay Kumar) who works for NASA lands up at their doorstep searching for Piya. Suhaan and Boney hatch a plan to get Agastya and Piya together, so that Suhaan need not pay the alimony to Piya and Agastya gets the girl of his dreams. Suhaan accompanies Agastya to New York City to get Piya hooked to Agastya. However a shocking truth emerges - Piya has given birth to a baby girl, Suhaan's daughter. Suhaan realizes his mistake and tries to make amends and start a new life with Piya and his baby daughter, Suhani. Unfortunately before he can act, Piya gets engaged to Agastya.

It later emerges that Piya's brother, Vishal, had been hiding letters from her that Suhaan wrote to her. Agastya knows Piya's heart is truly with Suhaan and not him, so he tells her everything. Piya flies back to India where Suhaan is living an unhappy life as a small-time actor. A few years later, the movie ends where it begins. Agastya is working for NASA with his girlfriend who looks strikingly similar to Piya, Preity Zintakova. The girls talk over videophone and don't let the guys get a word in edgeways. The movie ends with the couples promising to get together in a few months' time when the NASA mission is over.

Box office

Jaan-E-Mann opened in nearly 1,200 screens worldwide. [4] The film faced stiff competition from the Shahrukh Khan starrer, Don - The Chase Begins Again as it was released on the same day. Don - The Chase Begins Again, directed by Farhan Akhtar, is a remake of the blockbuster 1978 film Don. The film opened to a 40% response. The second day saw a huge drop in the collections, due to the Diwali celebrations. According to boxofficeindia. com the collections jumped to 70%, but fell again to 50%. The film has not done well in the smaller centres in India. [5]

Despite the disappointing first week, the collections picked up due to word of mouth. Post Eid, the film saw a dramatic upswing and the film was declared a hit but collections failed to sustain and eventually the film was declared a flop. [6] Pranab Kapadia, the UK distributor of Jaan-e-Mann said "Jaan-E-Mann’s figures have picked up dramatically in Britain. Although the film grossed a mere £18,000 on its opening day, the film has experienced a remarkable upswing, grossing £40,000 on Monday and £60,000 on Tuesday. The audience and critics reception has been overwhelming". [7]

Reviews

Despite the disappointing box office figures, the film has fetched extremely good reviews. Reviewer Samrat Sharma from fullhyd calls it "a film that celebrates cinema's achievement in creating the spectacle as an art form, and hands out a visual storytelling device that fuses music and colors in a vivid narrative". [8] The three lead actors got very good reviews for their performances, especially Akshay Kumar, who was applauded for his comic timing in the film. Preity Zinta was criticised for taking a short role, though her acting performance was praised. [9][10][11]
