Lewis was educated at the (former independent) William Hulme Grammar School in Manchester, Stand Sixth Form College (former Stand Grammar School, now closed) and Bury College. William Hulme's Grammar School is an Academy (an independent school pre- September 2007 in Whalley Range, Bury College is an institute of higher learning for the borough of Bury, England.

Controversy

In 2008, Ivan Lewis was described in the House of Commons as an "arsehole" by Greg Mulholland MP, following Lewis's refusal to allow Mulholland to intervene to correct statements Lewis had made in debate on hospice funding. He is Vice-Chair of Labour Friends of Israel, and a trustee of the Holocaust Educational Trust. Labour Friends of Israel is a UK Parliament -based Lobby group promoting support within the British Labour Party for a strong bilateral relationship between The Holocaust Educational Trust (HET is a British charity founded by Greville Janner and Merlyn Rees Its chairman is Greville Janner and its president Before his election he was the Chief Executive of Manchester Jewish Social Services.
