Isachsen was a remote arctic research station on the western shore of Ellef Ringnes Island in the Sverdrup Islands, in the territory of Nunavut in Canada. The Arctic is the Region around the Earth 's North Pole, opposite the Antarctic region around the South Pole. Ellef Ringnes Island is one of the Sverdrup Islands in Nunavut, Canada. In the 1950s Isachsen was a joint U. S. -Canadian weather station primarily taking radiosonde soundings. A radiosonde ( Sonde is French for Probe) is a unit for use in Weather balloons that measures various atmospheric parameters Along with soundings from similar stations such as Mould Bay, Eureka, and Alert this information was used to complete the North American data primarily used to forecast weather over the North Atlantic and long range forecasts for Europe. Eureka is a small research base on Ellesmere Island, Qikiqtaaluk Region, in the Canadian territory of Alert, in the Qikiqtaaluk Region, Nunavut Canada, is the northernmost permanently inhabited place in the world Weather forecasting is the application of science and technology to predict the state of the atmosphere for a future time and a given location
Isachsen was an isolated location with the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) flying in supplies in the late spring and again in the early fall from a base at Resolute on Cornwallis Island. Resolute ( Inuktitut: iu-Latn Qausuittuq ( place with no dawn) sometimes Resolute Bay) is a Cornwallis Island is one of the Queen Elizabeth Islands in the Qikiqtaaluk Region of Nunavut in the Canadian Arctic. Resolute was supplied by sealift using cargo ships led by icebreakers in late summer. Sealift is a term used predominantly in Military logistics and refers to the use of Cargo ships for the deployment of military assets such as A cargo ship or freighter is any sort of Ship or vessel that carries Cargo, goods and materials from one port to another An icebreaker is a special purpose Ship or Boat designed to move and navigate through Ice -covered waters Isachsen's 8 man staff consisted of 4 Americans and 4 Canadians. The U. S. supplied two weather personnel, a cook, and a mechanic. Canada supplied two weather personnel and two radio operators as all communications was by shortwave radio using morse code. In 1956, a government plan was scrapped to resettle Inuit people at several high Arctic locations, which included Isachsen, Alert, Eureka, and Mould Bay. Inuit (plural the singular Inuk, means "man" or "person" is a general term for a group of culturally similar Indigenous peoples inhabiting If the plan had proceeded, a permanent town would have been established at Isachsen.
