The Irish First Division is the second tier in Northern Irish association football.
From 1995-2003, senior football in Northern Ireland was divided into two divisions (the Irish League Premier Division and First Division). In 2003, however, a single senior division of sixteen clubs, known as the Irish Premier League, and organised directly by the Irish Football Association was created. From 2003, the Irish League First Division (since 2004, the IFA Intermediate League First Division), has had 'intermediate' status.
From the 2008-09 season, Irish League football will again be re-organised. The Premier League will be reduced from sixteen to twelve teams, but it is not yet known what will become of the IFA Intermediate League.
