Despite earlier possessing a considerable reputation, the wines of Irancy had long since lost out to their more famous cousins in the Côte-d'Or. Côte-d'Or is a department in the eastern part of France. History Côte-d'Or is one of the original 83 departments created during the French However from the 1980's onwards a number of producers have worked to change this situation and in 1999 they were rewarded with an area specific AOC. Appellation d’origine contrôlée ( AOC) which translates as "controlled term of origin" is the French certification granted to certain French The area primarily produces red wines (although there is also a small amount of rosé), predominantly from the Pinot noir grape. A rosé (From French rosé ‘pinkish’ Wine has some of the color typical of a red wine but only enough to turn it pink Pinot noir ('pino nwar is a red Wine Grape variety of the species Vitis vinifera. Some produces also include small quantities of César and Tressot, lesser known Burgundy grape varieties. César is an ancient red Wine Grape from northern Burgundy. It makes dark tannic wines that are softened by blending with Pinot Noir and sometimes Bastardo ( Trousseau Noir, Tressot) is an old variety of red wine Grape.
Irancy's unusual topography (it lies in the hollow of a valley whose slopes are covered with vines and cherry trees) shelter it from some of the worst of the winter weather, whilst also allowing for sufficient sun to ripen the grapes (this is one of the most northerly areas for red wine growing).
In most years Irancy wines can be consumed within 3 or 4 years of their bottling, however many vintages will continue to improve for many years beyond that.
An outstanding year. A pleasant spring was followed by a good summer with temperatures ranging between C25-28 and cool evenings.
Despite a wet August some good wines were produced, with good aromas and a distinctive minerally flavour
This extraordinarily hot summer and in particular the heatwave between 14th of July and the 20th of August, have created an extraordinary and atypical Irancy. High tannin levels will mean that it will be some years before these wines are ready for drinking. Closer to a Rhone wine than a typical Burgundy.
A hail storm in September did not provide the ideal background to the 2002 harvest. Despite this much work was done to save the harvest and the Irancy 2002, have a fine aroma very elegant, supported by a beautiful structure.
An outstanding vintage. Well balanced with great structure. Now starting to drink well (2008), but with potential to continue to improve for many years.
As of the census of 1999, the population was 332. A census is the procedure of acquiring information about every member of a given population
