Ibaraki Prefecture was previously known as Hitachi Province. Hitachi (常陸国 -no kuni was an old province of Japan which bordered on Iwashiro, Iwaki, Shimousa, and Shimotsuke provinces In 1871, the name of the province became Ibaraki.
