Personal and early life
When he was thirteen years old, he attended the 1955 New Zealand Grand Prix at Ardmore[1] which inspired him and provided him with an impetus to follow a career in racing. Ardmore is a large rural locality of Auckland, New Zealand. Located to the South-East of Auckland CBD just 27 km away [2] Immediately after leaving school, Ganley became a reporter for the Waikato Times[3] and wrote a column for Sports Car Illustrated. The Waikato Times is a daily broadsheet Newspaper published in Hamilton New Zealand with a circulation to the greater Waikato region Car and Driver is an American automotive enthusiast Magazine. [3] He moved to the United Kingdom in 1961 and pursued a career as a mechanic. Career
Pre-Formula One
Between 1960 and 1962, Ganley competed in many events throughout New Zealand driving a Lotus Eleven. The Lotus Eleven was a Racing car built in various versions by Lotus from 1956 until 1958 [3] Throughout this period, he was earning a living by working as a foreman for a concreting company. In Construction, the foreman is the worker or Tradesman who is in charge of the construction crew Concrete is a construction material composed of Cement (commonly Portland cement) as well as other cementitious materials such as Fly ash and Slag [3]
In 1970, Ganley finished second to Peter Gethin in the British Formula 5000 championship. Peter Kenneth Gethin (born February 21, 1940) is a former Racing driver from England. Formula 5000 (or F5000) was an auto-racing formula that ran different series in various regions around the world from 1968 to 1982 [1] This caught the attention of the BRM Formula One team, who signed him to a contract for 1971. In 1971, Ganley started off the season promisingly with fifth place at the non-championship Race of Champions. Ganley's Tiga team had plans to compete in Formula One in 1978, with the Finnish driver Mikko Kozarowitzky, but the project didn't succeed due to a lack of funding.
