Horus Rising, as the title suggests, details the rise to power of Warmaster Horus, Primarch of the Luna Wolves, after the Emperor appointed him commander of the Imperial military. Much of the focus is on the captain of the Luna Wolves' Tenth Company, Garviel Loken, as he becomes a member of the Mournival (an advisory body to Horus) and his involvement in campaigns against traitors and aliens at the close of the Great Crusade.
Inconsistencies within the Warhammer 40,000 universe
- In Horus Rising, the Blood Angels Primarch, Sanguinius, is described as having dark hair, although all other sources within the Warhammer 40,000 universe portray him as having blonde hair.
- One marine is shown to have the title Chapter Master. Techically this is impossible as the Second Founding had not occurred yet. Although several Legions were sub divided in to chapters internally as well as great companies at the time of the Heresy.
