The name

Hordaland (Norse: Hörðaland) (Frisian: Hörnaland) is the old name of the region - revived in modern times. Old Norse is the North Germanic language that was spoken by inhabitants of Scandinavia and inhabitants of their overseas settlements during the Viking Age Old Frisian was the West Germanic language spoken between the 8th and 16th centuries by the people who had settled in the area between the Rhine The first element is the plural genitive case of hörðar, the name of an old Germanic tribe (see Charudes).
