An attempted coup by a fundamentalist faction results in the near elimination of the Grayson government. The Grayson Civil War between the "Faithful" led by Steadholders Bancroft, Oswald and Simonds and the "Moderates" led by Benjamin Mayhew begins. The war ends thanks to the efforts of Barbara Bancroft, wife of Steadholder Bancroft. Under the terms of the peace treaty, 47,000 members of the "Faithful" are exiled to the nearby Endicott System, where they would establish the colony of Masada. This begins a 600-year long cycle of cold and hot wars between Grayson and Masada.

The Gryphon Uprising; a violent civil conflict between Gryphon's local nobility and small farmers which challenges the Manticoran monarchy. The monarchy's handling of the conflict earns it the undying loyalty of Gryphon's small farmers - a sentiment matched only by their equally implacable hatred of most other nobles and aristocrats.

Warshawski sail technology had improved to the point that hyper ships could sail 'against the wind' on grav waves by producing a negative 'grab factor'.

Warshawski grav wave detector ranges have reached 20 light seconds. This jumps to 8 light minutes over the next hundred years, which will allow theta band hyperspace travel at the time of the book series.

The events at Basilisk Station mark the first hostile intentions of the People's Republic of Haven against the Star Kingdom of Manticore. The PRH deny all responsibility.

Hostilities with the Manticoran Alliance reinstated through a misunderstanding resulting from tampering with diplomatic communiques from Manticore (War of Honor).

A series of assassinations and attempted assassinations, staged secretly by the Mesan Manpower corporation to frame the Republic of Haven, sabotages efforts by Theisman and Pritchart to arrange a conference to make peace with Queen Elizabeth III and the Manticoran Alliance. This leads to Haven's desperate attempt to end the war by striking directly against the capital of the Star Kingdom of Manticore. The Battle of Manticore, the single largest naval action in human history, ends with estimates of over two million service personnel on both sides killed, ten thousand wounded and almost four hundred thousand POWs (At All Costs).
