HoHoCon (or XmasCon) was a conference series which took place shortly before or after Christmas in Houston, Texas, sponsored by Drunkfux and the hacker ezine CULT OF THE DEAD COW. An underground ezine is a publication without defined periodicity that discusses any subject which the Publisher deems interesting or newsworthy CULT OF THE DEAD COW, also known as cDc or cDc Communications, is a computer hacker and DIY The fourth and fifth HoHoCons were also sponsored by Phrack magazine and took place in Austin, Texas. Phrack is an Underground ezine written by and for hackers first published November 17, 1985. Phreaking software BlueBEEP was released at HoHoCon '93. Phreaking is a Slang term coined to describe the activity of a Subculture of people who study experiment with or explore telecommunication systems like equipment BlueBEEP was a popular blue boxing computer program for MS-DOS written between 1993-1995 by a young German programmer known by the Pseudonym
HoHoCon is generally credited as being the first "modern" hacker con, although SummerCon was around before it. Summercon is one of the oldest hacker conventions. It helped set a precedent for more modern "cons" such as H It inspired later conventions such as DEF CON and H.O.P.E.
All together, there were five conferences. DEF CON (also written as DEFCON or Defcon) is the world's largest annual Hacker convention held every year in Las Vegas Nevada. HOPE (abbreviation Hackers on Planet Earth or the first two letters in Hotel Pennsylvania is a conference series sponsored by the hacker magazine
