Hermaness is the northernmost headland of Unst, the northernmost inhabited island of Shetland, Scotland. Unst is one of the North Isles of the Shetland Islands, Scotland. Shetland (formerly spelled Zetland, from etland; Old Norse non Hjaltland; Sealtainn is an Archipelago off the northeast coast of Scotland ( Gaelic: Alba) is a Country in northwest Europethat occupies the northern third of the island of Great Britain. It consists of sea cliffs and moorland.

Hermaness was designated a National Nature Reserve in 1955 and is currently managed by Scottish Natural Heritage although the land remains in the ownership of the Edmonston family of Haroldswick, who are still major landowners on Unst. The Northern Fulmar ( Fulmarus glacialis) or Arctic Fulmar lives in the north Atlantic and north Pacific. The Northern Gannet ( Morus bassanus, formerly Sula bassana) is a Seabird and is the largest member of the Gannet family Sulidae The European Shag or Common Shag ( Phalacrocorax aristotelis) is a species of Cormorant. The Great Skua, Stercorarius skua, is a large Seabird in the Skua family Stercorariidae The Atlantic Puffin ( la Fratercula arctica) is a Seabird Species in the Auk family. The Common Guillemot or Common Murre ( Uria aalge) is a large Auk. [2]

The NNR designation also includes the outlying Muckle Flugga and Out Stack. Muckle Flugga is a small rocky Island north of Unst in the Shetland Islands, Scotland. Out Stack or Ootsta in Shetland, Scotland, is the northernmost of the British Isles, lying immediately to the north of Muckle

Hermaness was also the home to a Black-browed Albatross, an extreme rarity in the northern hemisphere, every summer from 1972 until 1995 (except 1988 and 1989). The Black-browed Albatross, Thalassarche melanophrys, is a large Seabird of the Albatross family Diomedeidae. This bird, nicknamed 'Albert', proved a major attraction to British birdwatchers, many of whom made the journey northwards to see it. Birdwatching or birding is the observation and study of Birds with the naked eye or through a visual enhancement device like Binoculars. [3]
