Role in the "Singing Revolution"

Helsinki-86 was an important early actor during the "Singing Revolution" in Latvia, during which the country regained its independence form the USSR. The Singing Revolution is a commonly used name for events between 1987 and 1990 that led to the restoration of the independence of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania

By the beginning of 1988, there were nearly twenty members of Helsinki-86.
