In October 1998, Judge Jeff Hines accepted Carneal's plea of guilty but mentally ill from Michael Carneal. After the incident Carneal was transported to the Kentucky State Penitentiary in Eddyville where he remains. The Kentucky State Penitentiary also known as the "Castle on the Cumberland" is the state’s only maximum security male facility Eddyville is a city in Lyon County, Kentucky, United States.
