History

The Trophy was first awarded in the Championship Final of the 1964-65 season to Terry Fogerty whilst playing for Halifax. The Rugby League Championship was the major professional competition organised by the Rugby Football League in Great Britain. Halifax RLFC is one of the most historic Rugby league clubs in the game formed over a century ago in 1873 in the Yorkshire town of Halifax.

After the 1972-73 season the play-off system was dropped as the League went to two divisions.
