In human mitochondrial genetics, Haplogroup Q is a human mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplogroup. Mitochondrial genetics is the study of the Genetics of the DNA contained in Mitochondria. In Human genetics, a human mitochondrial DNA haplogroup is a Haplogroup defined by differences in human mitochondrial DNA.
Today, mitochondrial DNA Haplogroup Q is found in the southern Pacific region, especially in New Guinea and Melanesia. The Pacific Rim refers to the countries and cities located around the edge of the Pacific Ocean. New Guinea, located just north of Australia, is the world's second largest island, having become separated from the Australian mainland when the area now known Melanesia (from Greek: μέλας black, νῆσος island) means "islands of the black-skinned people" [1] Haplogroup Q is very diverse and frequently occurring among Papuan and Melanesian populations, with an inferred coalescence time of approximately 50,000 years before present. The frequency of this haplogroup among the populations of the islands of Wallacea in eastern Indonesia is quite high, indicating some genetic affinity between the populations of these islands and the indigenous peoples of New Guinea. Wallacea is a biogeographical designation for a group of Indonesian islands separated by deep water Straits from the Asian and Australian Haplogroup Q has also been found, albeit at very low frequency, among modern populations of Sundaland, Micronesia, and Polynesia. Sundaland is a biogeographical region of Southeastern Asia that comprises the Malay Peninsula and the Malay Archipelago islands of Sumatra Micronesia, from the Greek mikros (μικρός (meaning small) and nesos (νῆσος (meaning island) is a Subregion Polynesia (from Greek: πολύς many, νῆσος island) is a Subregion of Oceania, comprising a large grouping of over
Relationship to other haplogroups
Haplogroup Q is a descendant of haplogroup M. In Human genetics, Haplogroup M is a Human mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA haplogroup.
