In human mitochondrial genetics, Haplogroup G is a human mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplogroup. Mitochondrial genetics is the study of the Genetics of the DNA contained in Mitochondria. In Human genetics, a human mitochondrial DNA haplogroup is a Haplogroup defined by differences in human mitochondrial DNA.

It is an East Asian haplogroup[1]. Today G is found at its highest frequency in northeastern Siberia. Siberia (Сиби́рь Sibir) is the name given to the vast region constituting almost all of Northern Asia and for the most part currently serving [2] Haplogroup G is also found at lower frequency among some populations of northern East Asia and Central Asia. Central Asia is a region of Asia from the Caspian Sea in the west to central China in the east and from southern Russia in the north to northern Pakistan in the south However, unlike other mitochondrial DNA haplogroups typical of populations of northeastern Asia, such as haplogroup A, haplogroup C, and haplogroup D, haplogroup G has not been found among indigenous peoples of the Americas. In Human genetics, Haplogroup A is a human mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA haplogroup. In Human mitochondrial genetics, Haplogroup C is a Human mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA haplogroup. In Human genetics, Haplogroup D is a Human mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA haplogroup. Relationship to other haplogroups

Haplogroup G is a descendant of haplogroup M. In Human genetics, Haplogroup M is a Human mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA haplogroup.

Subclades

Haplogroup G is divided into subclades G1 and G2a, which represent the Koryaks and Itelmen. In Genetics, subclade is a term used to describe a subgroup of a Subgenus or Haplogroup. Koryaks (or Koriak are an indigenous people of Kamchatka Krai in the Russian Far East, who inhabit the coastlands of the Bering Sea to the south of the The Itelmen, sometimes known as Kamchadal, are an Ethnic group who are the original inhabitants living on the Kamchatka peninsula in Russia.
