Hanau was first mentioned in 1143 and became a city in 1303. Großauheim (13369 inhabitants without Wolfgang 11669 is the biggest district of Hanau, Hesse, Germany, on the north bank of the Main.
At the end of the 16th century, Count Philipp Ludwig II allowed Protestant refugees from the Netherlands to found their own settlement near Hanau, to which these Walloons brought their knowledge of jewellery production. Protestantism refers to the forms of Christian faith and practice that originated in the 16th century Protestant Reformation.
