History

Halebidu was the 12th century capital of the Hoysalas. The Hoysala Empire ( Kannada: ಹೊಯ್ಸಳ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯ ( pronunciation: in Kannada was a prominent South Indian Kannadiga The Hoysaleswara temple was built during this time by Ketamala and attributed to Vishnuvardhana,[1] the Hoysala ruler. The temple complex comprises two Hindu temples, the Hoysaleshawara and Kedareshwara temples and two Jain basadi. Hoysaleswara temple is a temple dedicated to Hindu God Shiva. A temple (from the Latin word Templum) is a structure reserved for religious or spiritual activities such as prayer and sacrifice or analogous rites Basadi (also basti) is a Jain shrine or temple The word is generally used in South India including Maharashtra In front of these temples there is a big lake. The two nandi bull statues which are on the side of the Hoysaleshwara temple are monolithic. A monolith is a geological feature such as a Mountain, consisting of a single massive stone or rock or a single piece of rock placed as or within a monument soap stone or Chloritic Schist was used for the construction of these temples. Soapstone (also known as steatite or soaprock) is a Metamorphic rock, a talc- Schist. However a number of sculptures in the temple are destructed by invaders. So the temple is incomplete. Halebid means ruined city. There is an archeological museum in the temple complex.
