History

There has been a settlement called Vanaja in where the city now stands since the Viking Age. Vanaja is an old name of a late municipality in central Tavastia, Finland, about 100 kilometers north of Helsinki. Viking Age is the term denoting the years from about 700 to 1066 in European history. The castle was built in the late 13th century to secure the Swedish power in central Finland. A village was born near to the Häme Castle to provide services and goods to inhabitants. A village is a clustered human settlement or community, larger than a hamlet, but smaller than a Town or City.
