The area was acquired by the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company (CCI) in 1901, who opened a mining operation there in 1905. Cleveland-Cliffs Inc is a Cleveland Ohio business firm that specializes in the mining and Beneficiation of Iron ore. In 1907, the president of CCI, William Gwinn Mather, commissioned the well-known Boston landscape designer, Warren H. Manning to design a residential community to support the mining operations. William Gwinn Mather (1857 - 1951 was an American industrialist Warren Henry Manning (November 7 1860&ndash1938 was an influential American landscape designer and promoter of the informal and naturalistic “wild garden” approach to garden design Mather named the community after his mother Elizabeth Lucy Gwinn. The community became known as a "Model Town", a trace of which remains in the name for the local high school sports teams: the "Modeltowners". It received a Post Office in 1908. The Austin Mine was also operated by Cleveland-Cliffs, which developed the community in 1911 to provide residences for miners and their families. Swanzy took its name from the Swanzy Iron Company, formed in 1883. [5] The Town is also known as the home of the Prewar Blues group Fredric Croix and Quickslide Rick who were briefly signed to RCA Victor in the 1920's. Fredric Croix and Quickslide Rick (AKA Rickli Briski were two miners and blues musicians from Gwinn Michigan in the 1920’s RCA Records (originally The Victor Talking Machine Company, then RCA Victor is one of the flagship labels of Sony Music Entertainment.
