Berhalter grew up in Tenafly, New Jersey. Tenafly (ˈtɛnəflaɪ is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. [1] He was a high school teammate of Claudio Reyna at Saint Benedict's Preparatory School in Newark, New Jersey. Claudio Reyna (born July 20, 1973 in Livingston, New Jersey) is a former American Association football player Saint Benedict's Preparatory School is an all boys Roman Catholic high school, established in 1868 that has been a part of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark is the largest city in New Jersey, United States and the County seat of Essex County. Berhalter left UNC after his junior year, signing with Dutch club FC Zwolle in 1994.
