Semisonic had signed a record contract with Elektra Records to record the Great Divide album. A recording contract (commonly called a record deal) is a legal agreement between a Record label and a Recording artist (or group where the artist Elektra Records is a now-dormant American Record label owned by Warner Music Group (WMG and from 2004 on operating under WMG's Atlantic Records During recording, Bob Krasnow, the president of Elektra Records had quit, and in the changeover to a new president, the label dropped Semisonic. The band then signed with MCA Records, and finished recording the album. [1]
