Gouyen (an Anglicization of Mescalero Góyą́ń "the one who is wise"), was a 19th century Mescalero Apache woman. Anglicisation or anglicization (see -ise vs -ize) is a process of conversion of verbal or written elements of any other language into a more comprehensible English Mescalero is a Southern Athabaskan language that is spoken in New Mexico. Mescalero (or Mescalero Apache) is a Native American tribe of Southern Athabaskan heritage currently living on the Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation She tracked down a Comanche chief who scalped her husband, tracking him to his camp. The Comanche are a Native American ethnic group whose range (the Comancheria) consisted of present-day eastern New Mexico, southern Colorado She lured him into the bushes, and attacked him, biting him in throat. When he passed out from blood loss, she stabbed him in the heart with his own knife, stripped him of his clothing, stole his warhorse and rode triumphantly back to her camp. Her chief stated:
"Gouyen is a brave and good woman. She has done a braver thing than has any man among the Mescaleros. She has killed the Comanche chief; and she has brought his weapons and garments to her people. She has ridden his mount. Let her always be honored by my people. "
Gouyen later fought alongside other Apaches against a party of miners.
