History
The district was established on October 1, 1922, when the newly created state of Thuringia was administratively divided into 15 districts and 9 district free cities. All of the south-western area of the district is covered by the Thuringian Forest, with the Großer Inselsberg (916 m) being the highest elevation in the west of the district.
