The school's Latin motto is spectemur agendo, which is conventionally translated into English as "judge me by what I do. Latin ( lingua Latīna, laˈtiːna is an Italic language, historically spoken in Latium and Ancient Rome. Spectemur Agendo is a Latin motto meaning Let us be judged by our acts. " Other translations include Let us be judged by our acts and By our deeds may we be known (this translation is preferred by Camberwell Grammar School in Melbourne, who shares the same motto). The houses were named after prominent local identities, with the exception of O. S. U. (Old Students Union) who used to sponsor many school events.
The houses compete in three sporting carnivals. In the summer season, a Swimming Carnival is held, and in the winter months an Athletic Carnival. There is also a cross-country run held in Autumn, but this is held on an afternoon at Adcock Park (a local oval) rather than an off-school carnival.
180 students are accepted into the school each year, bringing the total number of students to 1080.
The current principal of Gosford High School is Ms Lynne Searle. Principal or Head of School is the title of the chief administrator of an Elementary school, Middle school, or High school in some English-speaking Searle took over from previous principal Mr. Peter Hall in the fourth quarter of 2006, but did not become active in her position until 2007, with Deputy-Principal Paul Campbell serving as interim principal. She is the school's first female principal.
Notable among the current staff are Dr Mark Butler, recipient of the Prime Minister's Prize for Excellence in Science Teaching in Secondary Schools in 2004[1]

Gosford and Orange High School have one of the oldest school exchange systems in NSW. Orange High School may refer to Orange High School (California Orange High School (Ohio Orange High School (New Jersey Each year sporting teams are selected from both Orange and Gosford High Schools to compete against each other. The schools take turns in hosting the visit, with Gosford currently hosting in 2008. The studens are billeted by the hosting school for two nights during term 2 when the visit occuts. A billet is the US term for quarters which is a place to which a person generally a Soldier, is assigned to Sleep. Gosford High students will try out for the teams and train during normal Wendesday sport each week leading up to the visit.
