Gornal stone is a limestone which originates from the Sedgley area of Central England. Limestone is a Sedimentary rock composed largely of the Mineral Calcite ( Calcium carbonate: CaCO3 Sedgley is a town in the West Midlands of England, but historically in Staffordshire. The stone was quarried in the Lower Gornal area mostly during the 17th and 18th centuries. A quarry is a type of open-pit mine from which rock or Minerals are extracted As a means of recording the passage of Time, the 17th Century was that Century which lasted from 1601 - 1700 in the Gregorian calendar The 18th century lasted from 1701 to 1800 in the Gregorian calendar, in accordance with the Anno Domini / Common Era numbering system . At the peak of the quarrying, almost all buildings in the Sedgley manor (which also included the villages of Coseley, Woodsetton and Ettingshall) were built from Gornal stone, and numerous examples of the recognisable yellow brick remain, including several churches, houses and numerous old walls.
