The canton encompasses the southernmost Pacific coast of Costa Rica, north from Cerro Punta Gorda (Fat Point Hill) at the Panama border. It includes land on both sides of the Golfo Dulce (Sweet Gulf) and the entire southern portion of the Osa Peninsula. History

The canton was created by a decree of June 10, 1949. Puerto Jimenez is one of the largest towns in the Osa Peninsula, Puntarenas Province, Costa Rica with a population of 1780
