Giulio Cesare Polerio (1548, Lanciano - 1612, Rome) was an Italian chess player. Lanciano is a town and commune in the Province of Chieti, part of the Abruzzo region of southern Italy. In 1575, Polerio, who was nicknamed l'Abruzzese because Lanciano is in the Abruzzo region in Italy, accompanied his friend Giovanni Leonardo to Madrid. Giovanni Leonardo di Bona or Giovanni Leonardo da Cutri (both given names can be seen also in the reversed order Leonardo Giovanni) known as Il Puttino Madrid (pronounced in English in Spanish and colloquially in Spain) is the Capital and largest city of Spain. He and Leonardo played together as a team, contesting their chess skills against the formidable Ruy Lopez and Spain's other master chess player, Alfonso Ceron. The Ruy Lopez, called the Spanish Opening or Spanish Game outside English speaking countries, is a Chess opening characterised by the moves Later the Italians were joined by Paolo Boi, also known as Il Siracusano. After the contest of 1575, Polerio decided to remain in Madrid. A number of manuscripts written between 1580 and 1600 have been ascribed to him. It is mainly due to Polerio's works that it is possible to appreciate Spanish and Italian chess of the period.

After returning to Rome, Polerio became a chess master for the Prince of Buoncompagno. In 1606, he lost a match to Geronimo Cascio in Rome.
