Born in Cadegliano-Viconago, Italy, Lake Maggiore and the Swiss border, Menotti was the sixth child of Alfonso and Ines Menotti. Cadegliano-Viconago is a Comune (municipality in the Province of Varese in the Italian region Lombardy, located about 60 km northwest [1] Menotti began writing songs when he was seven years old, and at eleven wrote both the libretto and music for his first opera, The Death of Pierrot.
