German beer is highly diverse and an important part of Germany's culture. This article deals with the Culture of Germany as a political state within Europe for a review of the culture of the German-speaking world, see There are around 1,300 breweries in Germany, more than in any other country except the United States which has 1,500. A brewery is a dedicated building for the making of Beer, though beer can be made in the home and has been for much of beer's history [1] The German beer market is somewhat sheltered from the rest of the world beer market by the German brewers' adherence to the Reinheitsgebot (order of purity ) dating from 1516 (and most recently updated in the Vorläufiges Biergesetz of 1993), according to which the only allowed ingredients of beer are water, hops and barley-malt. The (literally "purity order" sometimes called the "German Beer Purity Law" or the "Bavarian Purity Law" in English is a regulation concerning the production of Water is a common Chemical substance that is essential for the survival of all known forms of Life. The hop ( Humulus) is a small genus of Flowering plants native to the temperate Northern Hemisphere. Malting is a process applied to Cereal grains in which the grains are made to Germinate by soaking in water and are then quickly halted from germinating further This law also requires that beers not using only barley-malt (such as wheat and rye) must be top-fermented. Wheat beer is a Beer that is brewed with a significant proportion of Wheat. Rye beer refers to any Beer in which Rye (generally Malted is substituted for some portion of the Barley malt Ale is a type of Beer brewed from Malted Barley using a top-fermenting Brewers' yeast. [2] Many breweries worldwide adopted the Reinheitsgebot for their own beers. After its discovery, yeast became the fourth legal ingredient, though for top-fermenting beers the use of sugar is also permitted. Yeasts are a growth form of eukaryotic Microorganisms classified in the kingdom Fungi, with about 1500 Species currently described Sugar is a class of edible Crystalline substances mainly Sucrose, Lactose, and Fructose. In part because of this law (which since 1988 has not applied to imported beer, but is still compulsory for German brewers), beers from Germany have a reputation for high quality. Year 1988 ( MCMLXXXVIII) was a Leap year starting on Friday (link displays 1988 Gregorian calendar) The Germans are behind only the Czechs and the Irish in their per capita consumption of beer.
