George I of Hesse-Darmstadt was the Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt from 1567 to 1596. Landgrave ( Dutch landgraaf, German Landgraf; French landgrave; Latin comes magnus, comes patriae The Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt (Landgrafschaft Hessen-Darmstadt was a member state of the Holy Roman Empire.

Born on 10 September 1547 in Kassel, he was the fourth son of Philip I the Magnanimous of Hesse and Christine of Saxony. Events 506 - The Bishops of Visigothic Gaul meet in the Council of Agde. Following his father's death in 1567 Hesse was divided between his four sons. George I received the upper County of Katzenelnbogen and selected Darmstadt as his residence. The County of Katzenelnbogen ( Chatti Melibokus) was a County of the Holy Roman Empire in the Middle Rhine area which Darmstadt is a city in the Bundesland He died on 7 February 1596 and the Landgraviate was passed to his son Louis. Louis V of Hesse-Darmstadt ( German: Ludwig) was the Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt from 1596 to 1626
