The city of Geertruidenberg
Geertruidenberg received city rights in 1213. Raamsdonk is a village in the Dutch province of North Brabant. City rights are a medieval phenomenon in the history of the Low Countries. Today it's part of the province of Noord Brabant, but Geertruidenberg was once part of the county of Holland. Geertruidenberg is the oldest city of Holland as it was the first to receive such rights. Holland is a region in the western part of the Netherlands. A maritime and economic power in the 17th century Holland today consists of the Dutch provinces of It's a common misconception that Geertruidenberg is the oldest city of The Netherlands, because the names Holland and The Netherlands are used interchangeably by some.
