Part of the Greater Nottingham area, the constituency covers the most populated parts of the borough of Gedling, covering the mainly affluent north eastern suburbs of the Nottingham area including Arnold, Burton Joyce, Carlton, Colwick and Gedling village Woodthorpe and Mapperley Plains. Greater Nottingham is a Conurbation based around the city of Nottingham in Nottinghamshire, England. Arnold is a suburb of Nottingham, England. It is to the north-east of the city boundary and is in the local government district of Gedling. Burton Joyce is a large village and Civil parish in the Gedling district of Nottinghamshire, England. Carlton is a Suburb to the east of the city of Nottingham in the borough of Gedling. Colwick is a suburb in the east of Greater Nottingham in England. Gedling is a village in Nottinghamshire, England, that is now a Suburb of Greater Nottingham.

It is a mostly middle-class residential area, with similar characteristics to the nearby Broxtowe constituency, on the opposite side of Nottingham. The constituency of Gedling was created in 1983, replacing the earlier Carlton constituency.
