In 1979, Gary & Norma Smalley started an organization focused on helping families. After the formation of a board, they launched the CMI organization out of Waco, Texas. Waco (ˈweɪkoʊ is a city in and the County seat of McLennan County, Texas. A few years later they moved to Phoenix, Arizona and Gary spoke in places all over the country. Phoenix (ˈfiːˌnɪks O'odham Skikik, Yavapai Wasinka, Western Apache Fiinigis, Navajo Hoozdo, Gary co-authored two books with Steve Scott during that time titled, If Only He Knew and For Better or For Best. Those books have sold over one million copies each and have become marriage classics.
In 1985, the organization's name became Today's Family. That year, Gary and Norma hired more staff to enlarge their reach around the country.
In 1988, Gary partnered with American Telecast's Steve Scott and they launched a nation-wide infomerical with Dick Clark as the host of a half-hour television program. Gary Smalley has become one of the country's best-known authors and speakers on family relationships. He is the author and co-author of 28 books along with several popular films and videos. He has spent over 35 years learning, teaching, and counseling. Gary has personally interviewed hundreds of singles and couples and has surveyed thousands of people at his seminars asking two questions: What is it that strengthens your relationships and what weakens them?
Gary's 40 books combined have sold over 6 million copies, and several have been translated into other languages. The Blessing and The Two Sides of Love won the Gold Medallion Award for excellence in literature. The Language of Love won the Angel Award as the best contribution to family life. Gary is president and founder of the Smalley Relationship Center. The center provides conferences nation-wide, books, DVD. Gary and his wife, Norma, have been married for 41 years and live in Branson, Missouri. Branson is a city in Stone and Taney counties in the US state of Missouri. They have one daughter, and two sons.
Gary's book, The DNA of Relationships has been put together based on years of new research. In this series Gary provides the most practical principles on making sure that your relationships will last a lifetime and why many couple never reach the close connection that they desire. Gary's newest book, about how our beliefs control everything about us and how to easily change those beliefs, is entitled, Change Your Heart, Change Your Life (2008).
