The Early Years

In the mid 60's Gary attended a Sydney based Radio School, which ultimately led to his first radio job at 2NX in Newcastle, NSW, as night announcer. Twelve months later he moved to 2MG Mudgee, where for nearly 8 months he worked three on-air shifts a day - plus sold, wrote and produced a high percentage of that station's advertising content.

He returned to 2NX for a brief stint before heading to New Zealand as a freelance announcer at two radio stations in the North Island.

His next radio position brought him back to Australia to 2BS Bathurst, where during his three-year stay he became the highest rated breakfast announcer in Mid-Western NSW and was appointed Assistant Manager.

The Big Smoke

In the late 60's, he moved to Melbourne and joined 3AK for 6 years. By mid 1975, Gary returned to full time radio joining 3DB (now MIX-FM) as programmer and announcer, while continuing his freelance booth and program promotion voice-overs for Channel 7. In 1977 he was offered and accepted a position at 3KZ (now Gold-FM) to spearhead a new music format and host the breakfast show. Also 1977 (album by Ash. It was in August 1979 that Gary formed his own company and recording studio. The facility continues to produce Radio and TV commercials, Telephone On-Hold Services, Corporate Video and Documentary Soundtracks, Music Programming and Record Restorations.

From 1979 to1988, he was the "voice" of Channel 10, and became involved with many on and off camera presentations, including the Radio D. J. Competition segment on the "EARLY BIRD SHOW"


The Melbourne Radio School

In February 1984 Gary and his wife Joan, established the Melbourne Radio School. Year 1984 ( MCMLXXXIV) was a Leap year starting on Sunday (link displays the 1984 Gregorian calendar) During nineteen years of operation Gary Mac built a reputation within the industry as a leading radio educator. He developed a training method that over the years launched the radio careers of a formidable number of people into a variety of radio jobs including announcers, creative copywriters, promotions, sales and marketing personal, news positions, audio operators, producers and programmers. Many of these people have moved on to administrative roles as managers and program directors.

During 1987 Gary returned to freelance radio to anchor the morning slot at 3UZ. Then in 1992 he became a major part of the on-air and music programming team at Melbourne radio station 3EE. Here, he moved into the competitive and prestigious 9am to noon morning show, while retaining his successful Saturday night program "BREEZE CUISINE". Licence ownership has changed several times and the station is now known as MAGIC 1278.

Gary Mac is a recognised voice coach and free lance voice-over for radio and TV commercials, product marketing videos and DVD’s, narrator of documentaries and corporate productions, interactive training programs via the internet or CD ROM that are used in Australia and other parts of the world. He remains closely involved with the ever-changing facets of the radio industry and continues to provide his proven voice over and radio training methods on a “one-on-one” basis.

His coaching techniques have been utilised by Channel TEN in voice and presentation for news journalists. Gary is part of the TAFE short course programs at both Holmesglen and Swinburne and provides contract voice coaching services for RMIT.
