The Garrison Library was founded in Gibraltar in 1793 by Colonel John Drinkwater Bethune and officially opened in 1804 by the Duke of Kent. In 2006 the editorial offices of the Gibraltar Chronicle moved to new premises in Watergate House, and the print works relocated in 2007 to New Harbours. The Gibraltar Chronicle is a national Newspaper published daily in Gibraltar since 1801 The archive currently remains at the Garrison Library.

The Garrison is a modest library of 35,000 books, including many rare volumes. There is an emphasis on the value of culture and travel in the library and it offers an excellent local history collection. Many lithographs and art prints are held here and even the furnishings are said to have interesting historical backgrounds. Lithography is a method for Printing using a plate or stone with a completely smooth surface
