St. Joseph Catholic Church
St. Joseph Catholic Church is an influential part of the Garrett Community. It runs the only Catholic school in Garrett, which goes to 6th grade. It is part of the diocese of South Bend-Fort Wayne. The Church use to run Sacred Heart Hospital, a historical landmark, which now is Sacred Heart appartments. St. Joseph also runs St. Martin's Soup Kitchen and Free Clinic. The Church is built in an Italian style and is over 100 years old.
Important Buildings
The Sacred Heart Apartments, once the Sacred Heart Hospital, was renovated in December of 2003. The Hospital was a historic landmark in Garrett dating back to 1902. In danger of being torn down because the hospital was closed, there was planning to turn the old hospital into apartments with construction beginning November of 2002. Now it has forty-two apartments, which are for senior citizens. It is located on 220 South Ijams Street.
The Garrett Community YMCA Community Center was opened in November of 2005. Some of the facilities offered in this community center are a gym, a workout room, childcare, a full size kitchen, and a before and after school fun club for children. Also there are three available community rooms that are available for rent, and an outside playground. Also the YMCA has a new pool that opened in the beginning of 2008. The pool has a hot tub and slide also. To raise money for this community center they had a fundraiser where a person could buy a brick with engravings on them for fifty dollars and Bingo. It is located at 1200 East Houston Street.
