GM's Epsilon platform replaced the N platform in the US, and replaced the GM2900 platform elsewhere. The General Motors N platform (commonly called the N-body) was a Front-wheel drive Compact car Automobile platform produced from The United States of America —commonly referred to as the General Motors introduced the mid-size Front-wheel drive GM2900 platform in 1988 with the introductions of the Opel Vectra A and the Vauxhall Cavalier Vehicles of this platform generally carry the symbol "Z" in the fourth digit of their VINs.

When the platform debuted, there was talk of an "Epsilon Wide" derivative, which was supposed to have provided the underpinnings for the Buick LaCrosse and Saab 9-5. The Buick LaCrosse is a Mid-size car produced by the Buick division of American automaker General Motors since 2004 as the 2005 model year The Saab 9-5 is an Executive car produced by the Swedish automobile maker Saab. However, the program was cancelled and the LaCrosse was put on the W platform, and the 9-5 was given a quick refresh for the 2006 model year. The W-body is an Automobile platform from General Motors which underpins Mid-size cars with Front-wheel drive.

Many of the Epsilon vehicles use the Ecotec Family II I4 engines and both the High Value and High Feature V6 engines. The Family II is a Straight-4 Piston engine that was originally developed by Opel in late 1970s for use in the Opel Ascona B and Opel Kadett The straight-4 or inline-4 engine (often abbreviated I4 or L4) is a four cylinder Internal combustion engine with all four cylinders The High Value engine family from General Motors is a group of Cam in Block or " Pushrod " V6 engines The 3600 LY7 (and derivative LP1) are members of General Motors ' new High Feature (or HFV6) engine family of modern DOHC

Control of the Epsilon platform has passed, as of 2005, to GM Europe. Year 2005 ( MMV) was a Common year starting on Saturday (link displays full calendar of the Gregorian calendar. Headquartered with Opel in Rüsselsheim, Germany, GM Europe will be responsible for all future Epsilon product decisions other than Saab and Cadillac models. Adam Opel GmbH (commonly known as Opel) is a German automaker part of General Motors. Rüsselsheim is the largest town in the Groß-Gerau district in the Rhein-Main region of Germany. Saab Automobile AB, better known as Saab, is a Swedish car manufacturer and currently a wholly-owned Subsidiary of General Motors. Cadillac is a Brand of Luxury vehicles owned by General Motors.

One reason for this central "homeroom" of Epsilon development was because of slight differences in the platform. GM assumed that all cars based on the platform were exactly the same underneath. This led Pontiac to approve a G6 convertible, since the 9-3 is available as a convertible. The Pontiac G6 is a Mid-size car produced under the Pontiac brand of American automaker General Motors. Unbeknownst to GM NA, Saab had changed some of the "points" of the platform when it developed the 9-3 to suit its production line, meaning Pontiac could not build it at the Orion Township plant. Orion Township (pronounced OR-ee-un is a Charter township of Oakland County in the U Pontiac only discovered the difference shortly before the convertible was set for production, which led to the convertible being pushed back. The Pontiac G6 hardtop convertible became available in spring 2006.

The refreshed 2008 SAAB 9-3 debuted with an advanced version of all-wheel-drive it dubbed XWD, finally giving a definitive answer to rumors about the platform's ability to support AWD, which had been around since the debut of the platform.
