Fruitarianism is a strict form of vegan diet that is limited to eating the ripe fruits of plants and trees. Fruitarians (frugivores[1] or fructarians) eat in principle only the fruit of plants. The term fruit has different meanings dependent on context and the term is not synonymous in Food preparation and Biology. Plants are living Organisms belonging to the kingdom Plantae. [2] As with other dietary practices, such as vegetarianism and raw foodism, some people consider themselves fruitarians even if their diet is not 100% fruit. Vegetarianism is the practice of a diet that excludes Meat (including game and slaughter by-products Fish (including Shellfish and other sea Raw foodism (or rawism) is a lifestyle promoting the consumption of un- cooked, un- processed, and often Organic foods as a large percentage According to these people, as long as the percentage is higher than 50%, they are (predominantly) fruitarian. [3] Usually fruitarians who include foods other than fruit follow a vegan diet. [4]

Definition of fruitarian

Some fruitarians will eat only what falls (or would fall) naturally from a plant, that is: foods that can be harvested without killing the plant. These foods consist primarily of culinary fruits, nuts, and seeds. A seed (in some plants referred to as a kernel) is a small embryonic Plant enclosed in a covering called the seed coat usually with some stored [6] Some do not eat grains, believing it is unnatural to do so,[7] and some fruitarians feel that it is improper for humans to eat seeds. [8] Others believe they should eat only plants that spread seeds when the plant is eaten. [9] Others eat seeds and some cooked foods. [10]

Some fruitarians use the botanical definitions of fruits and consume pulses,[11] while others include green leafy vegetables[12] and/or root vegetables in their diet. Pulses are annual leguminous crops yielding from one to twelve Grains or Seeds of variable size shape and color within a Pod, according The term " vegetable " generally means the edible parts of Plants The definition of the word is traditional rather than Scientific, however Some occasionally consume some dairy products as well. Motivation

Some fruitarians believe fruitarianism was the original diet of mankind in the form of Adam and Eve based on Genesis 1:29. Adam (אָדָם ʼĀḏām, "dust man mankind" آدم; Ge'ez: አዳ and Eve (חַוָּה Ḥawwā, "living [10] They believe that a return to an Eden-like paradise will require simple living and a holistic approach to health and diet. Not to be confused with Eden Gardens. The Garden of Eden ( Hebrew "pleasure" גַּן עֵדֶן Arabic: جنات عدن, Paradise is a word of Persian origin ( Persian: پردیس Pardìs) that is generally identified with the Garden of Eden or with Heaven. Simple living (or voluntary simplicity) is a lifestyle individuals choose to minimize the 'more-is-better' pursuit of Wealth and consumption. Distinguish from the suffix -holism, which describes addictions [13] Some fruitarians wish to avoid killing in all its forms, including plants. [10]

Some fruitarians say that eating some types of fruit does the parent plant a favor and that fleshy fruit has evolved to be eaten by animals, to achieve seed dispersal. Biological dispersal refers to those processes by which a Species maintains ecosystem [9] Fruit seeds passed in feces may sprout in a pile of ready-made fertilizer, encouraging proliferation of the plant,

Criticisms

The Health Promotion Program at Columbia University reports that a fruitarian diet can cause deficiencies in calcium, protein, iron, zinc, vitamin D, most B vitamins (especially B-12), and essential fatty acids. Lack of protein in fleshy fruit can make the lifestyle difficult to sustain, and can lead to the condition of hypoproteinemia or kwashiorkor. Hypoproteinemia (or "Hypoproteinaemia" is a condition where there is an abnormally low level of Protein in the Blood. Kwashiorkor is a type of malnutrition with controversial causes but it is commonly believed to be caused by insufficient protein intake Nuts (if included) are a good source of protein. Nut is a general term for the large dry oily Seeds or Fruit of some Plants. Due to the lower digestibility of plant proteins, however, the American Dietetic Association (ADA) states "protein needs might be higher than the RDA (when) dietary protein sources are mainly those that are less well digested, such as some cereals and legumes. The American Dietetic Association ( ADA) is the United States ' largest organization of Food and Nutrition professionals with nearly 67000 members The Dietary Reference Intake (or DRI is a system of Nutrition recommendations from the Institute of Medicine (IOM of the US National Academy of Sciences "[15]

Vitamin B12, a bacterial product, is not found in any fruits. According to the U. S. National Institutes of Health "natural food sources of vitamin B12 are limited to foods that come from animals. "NIH" redirects here For other meanings of NIH see NIH (disambiguation. "[16] Like vegans that do not consume B12-fortified foods (certain plant milks and breakfast cereals, for example), fruitarians need to include a B12 supplement in their diet. This may pose a health risk for strict fruitarians, as the B12 in fortified foods and supplements is derived from bacteria, not fruits. It is also contrary to the philosophy that humans are perfectly evolved to live off of fruit.

Claims made by fruitarian advocates have lead some to classify the diet as a form of outright quackery. [17] Many notable advocates of fruitarianism in the past, including Morris Krok,[18] Johnny Lovewisdom, Walter Siegmeister/Raymond Bernard, and Viktoras Kulvinskas did not adhere to a strict fruitarian diet. Johnny Lovewisdom ( July 23 1919 &ndash October 12 2000) was the author of The Buddhist Essene Gospel of Jesus. Some, like Johnny Lovewisdom, switched to other unorthodox lifestyles (including breatharianism and liquitarianism, juices only), while others, like Morris Krok, recommended against the diet once they stopped. Inedia is the alleged ability to live without Food, which has been dismissed by the scientific community [19]
