A free port (porto franco) or free zone (US: Foreign-Trade Zone) is a port or area with relaxed jurisdiction with respect to the country of location. Free economic zones may also be called free ports. Many countries have or have had at some time designated areas where companies are taxed very lightly or not at all to encourage development or for some other reason

Most commonly a free port is a special customs area with favorable customs regulations (or no customs duties and controls for transshipment). A customs area is an area designated for storage of commercial goods that have not yet cleared Customs. Customs is an Authority or agency in a Country responsible for collecting and safeguarding customs duties and for controlling the flow of goods Transshipment or Transhipment is the Shipment of goods to an intermediate destination and then from there to yet another destination Earlier in history some free ports like Hong Kong enjoyed political autonomy. Hong Kong ( officially the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, is a territory located on China 's south coast on the Pearl River Delta, and borders Many international airports have free ports, though they tend to be called customs areas, customs zones, or international zones.
