Professor Frederick Burkhardt (13 September 1913 - 23 September 2007)[1] was for many years the President Emeritus of the American Council of Learned Socities (ACLS). His decades of work on The Correspondence of Charles Darwin constituted a signal example of dedication to a demanding and ambitious scholarly enterprise. He was an Honorary Fellow of Clare Hall, Cambridge University. Clare Hall is a College for Advanced Study (admitting only Graduate Students) in the University of Cambridge.
