Francis was licensed to practise in 1826 and, after receiving his diploma from the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, he finished his studies in Europe. Upon his return, he concentrated mainly on teaching medicine and was instrumental in setting up the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Lower Canada. Francis Badgley continued to teach medicine in Canada until 1860. At that time he was on the medical faculty of the University of Trinity College in Toronto.
