It was established in 1961 when the former United States Air Force base, Ladd Field, was transferred to the Army and redesignated in honor of World War II general Jonathan M. Wainwright. History & Culture
Fort Wainwright has a rich homosexual history. In the 1990's the installation was nicknamed "Fort Gaynight". There have been a large amount of divorices from soldiers being unfaithful to their wives with other male soldiers. In the 1990's the orgies in the male barracks were notoriously loud.
