Formation Records is a Leicester-based drum and bass label that was founded in 1989 by DJ SS (Leroy Small) and his partner Eidris. Leicester (ˈlɛstə is the largest city and Unitary authority area in the East Midlands of England, and is the traditional Year 1989 ( MCMLXXXIX) was a Common year starting on Sunday (link displays 1989 Gregorian calendar) DJ SS, born Leroy Small (on August 27 1970, is a Drum and Bass DJ and producer from Leicester, United Kingdom. The label came to prominence from 1992 onwards releasing countless classics of darkside hardcore/jungle over the next couple of years. Year 1992 ( MCMXCII) was a Leap year starting on Wednesday (link will display full 1992 Gregorian calendar) The label evolved with the times and by 1994 was one of the leading jungle labels. Year 1994 ( MCMXCIV) was a Common year starting on Saturday (link will display full 1994 Gregorian calendar)
In the wake of this, the label created a number of subsidiary labels, each showcasing a differing style of music from the main imprint, including 100% Records, 5HQ Recordings, Reformed Records, New Identity, Easymen and F Project. F Project was a spin-off label from Formation Records which ran from 1992 to 1994.
In more recent times however, individual artists' experiences with the label have come to light. This has led to Formation Records being criticized for exploiting their artists, among other things. It is alleged that EQ, Rayner, Mental Power, Technique, John B, Twisted Individual, Zen, Generation Dub, Vital Elements, Mutated Forms, Smoke, Conecta and Nero, along with many others, are still owed money for releases. If this is due to the artist's themselves not carefully examining their contracts or not being willing to wait for the ultimate payout dates (many artists are generally impatient when it comes to payment), via mismanagement of the label's own financial assets through any number of possible scenarios or otherwise is currently unknown. For that matter, the very experiences of the artists' themselves which bring this rumour to life have yet to be confirmed as factual.
Formation team up with Finesse (R&B promotions) regularly to put on Formfinesse, a drum and bass rave held at the University of Leicester Students' Union.
