The International Food Safety Network (iFSN) at Kansas State University imparts the opportunity of improving the overall safety of the food supply by connecting all those in the agriculture and food industry. Kansas State University, commonly shortened to K-State, is an institution of higher learning located in Manhattan, Kansas, in the United States

iFSN offers a resource of evidence-based information through its website, listserves, research projects, on-farm food safety programs, publications, educational initiatives, graduate courses and policy analysis. An electronic mailing list (sometimes written as elist or e-list) is a special usage of e-mail that allows for widespread distribution of information to iFSN operates under the direction of Doug Powell. History

International Food Safety Network began as a communications experiment, collecting and rapidly redistributing information about food safety using the then just-burgeoning Internet.

Created in January 1993, as a combination of Powell's interests in science, media and the public following an outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 associated with Jack-in-the-Box restaurants, in which over 600 were sickened and four died from undercooked hamburgers. Escherichia coli O157H7 is an Enterohemorrhagic strain of the bacterium Escherichia coli and a cause of Foodborne illness Jack in the Box ( is an American Fast-food restaurant founded in 1951 in San Diego California, where it is still headquartered today

International Food Safety Network's emphasis is on the integration of public perceptions of food safety risks into traditional food safety risk analysis, and engaging the public on the nature of food-related risks and benefits.

Powell and the International Food Safety Network are a primary source for food safety information during outbreaks and are often quoted in mainstream media reports. [3][4][5][6][7]

Listserves

International Food Safety Network initiated four free internet-based mailing lists, offering current and general food safety and agricultural risk information to the public:

FSNet[8] contains material related to food safety, food-related outbreaks and recalls, and regulatory issues.

Agnet[9] includes information related to plant agriculture, biotechnology, organic food production, pests and pesticides, climatic issues and phytopathology. A pesticide is a substance or mixture of substances used to kill a pest.

AnimalNet[10] consists of information related to animal behavior and welfare, animal disease, antibiotic use and resistance, regulatory and trade issues.

Functional FoodNet[11] focuses on information pertaining to nutraceuticals and functional foods, nutrition, allergens, and antioxidants. Nutraceutical, a Portmanteau of Nutrition and Pharmaceutical, refers to extracts of foods claimed to have a medicinal effect on human health

One or two mailings summarizing issues of relevance are circulated every day for each listserve. The daily distribution goes to thousands of individuals in over 70 countries, including end-users in academia, industry, government, the farm community, the media and the public at large. The stories and summaries that make up the daily postings are condensed from items gathered from journalistic and scientific sources from around the world.

Websites

International Food Safety Network has three websites used for discussion of food safety topics.

The iFSN's newest website is a collection of food safety/poop-related material. [14]
